Digital reading will
completely take over. It's lightweight and it's fantastic for sharing. Over
time it will take over.

File
sharing is the practice of making files available for other individual to
download. The most common method of file sharing, is the use of peer- to –peer
software. This includes software such as Limewire, Morpheus, DropBox and
BitTorrent. P2P Software package are installed as a standalone application on computer
and appear somewhat innocuous in their behavior; you install them and then use
these programs to download “Free” music, video etc. In addition, your computer
becomes part of this network as well, enabling other individuals on the
Internet to begin downloading music/files/e-books from your computer.
Other ways
of file sharing over the internet such as:
- HTTP File hosting sites (RapidShare, Fileserve, ADrive, etc.)
- FTP servers
- Email storage space (sharing files -- Hotmail, Gmail, etc.)
The probable
security concern in file sharing
- Installation of malicious code
- Exposure of sensitive or personal information
- Susceptibility to attack
- Denial of service
- Prosecution
- Provide covert channel
How to
minimize these risks
- Use of anti-virus software
- Install or enable a firewall
- Use Authorize access control list.

I really like how you started with a quote. It really grabbed my attention. The details you provided were accurate and to the point, which helped to hold my attention. I thought it was good to go over the risks of using Peer-to-Peer software, and some of the ways to minimize that risk. I also liked that you provided links to your sources so that the reader can investigate further. It was also glad you went over everything in general instead of focusing on one set of software.
ReplyDeleteI like how you covered the methods of file sharing, the problems, and the solutions. The bullet points are a little vague and confusing though. I would like to know more about some of the security concerns such as prosecution and covert channels. I like the cloud because it is convenient when you are on devices with limited memory like smart phones or tablets. It is also helpful when you are sharing files to a large amount of people.
ReplyDeleteHi Vimal,
ReplyDeleteGreat post on File Sharing. I really learned a lot from reading this post. You executed everything thoroughly and concisely so I was interested in reading more on what you have to say about file sharing.
I also appreciated the fact that you included possible risks of file sharing AND how to prevent them. Most of the time, it's easier to just list the problems and concerns, rather than explain ways on how to prevent them. By doing both, you are increasing awareness to your readers and help them avoid such risks.
Hi Vimal, I like how you approached this hotly debated topic with a quote from Bill Gates. I also found it helpful to the reader when you listed the security concerns when doing file sharing and more importantly, how to prevent them. However, I think the reader would benefit more if you could briefly explain each bullet point. But otherwise good work!
